Calm after the Storm

Our early snow storm last week almost left Ron on the highway stranded. A less than two hour trip from CT took more than five hours, but he managed to turn in his Zip car on time, come home and collapse. Meanwhile I was enjoying a broadway show - the "Million Dollar Quartet" with my former roomate Valerie. As evidenced by the photo from my bedroom window, Sunday morning gave little evidence of the storm. It was a beautiful day!

9 11 2011

This morning I went for a bike ride in Central Park. AS I approached the southern edge I decided to get off my bike and walk along Central Park South. I ran into this memorial in honor of the First Responders of 9 11 2001. There were more than 260 persons pictured.

Last month many people in NYC panicked with the earthquake tremor and about a week later the hurricane came ashore. One woman just looked at me and said she's had her emergency supplies ready since 9 11 2001.

I know this day has marked many in our country and our world. In NYC people feel 9/11 in their gut every time any type of danger comes close.

May fear give way to hope.

Pre Storm / Post Storm

Things were busy, busy, busy yesterday in anticipation of the storm.

Now that it has quit raining, I went out to see the action and I found NYC delightfully quiet.

pre-hurricane activities

I'm glad we don't have TV yet. (We are planning to get TV soon so that I can watch college football.)
But even without TV, the radio hype is great. Maybe tomorrow I will be more humble, but I think you just need food, water, candles, and flashlights.
In preparation for the big hurricane, we tried to go for a walk. We knew the impending rain would discourage outside activities. We ignored the sign, but the police were circulating telling all that the park was closed.

Shopping Adventure

It may not look like much of an incline, but it was. I pushed the cart for the first half of the trip home - all on level ground. When we hit Central Park I let Ron take over.

We now have another cart that we can use for shopping. It is a little easier to maneuver, but it flipped the other day and I flipped over it. As I sat on the West Broadway sidewalk, Ron noted that I had done a very good job of falling. He said I rolled.

Dangerous Places Near Our Apartment

There are some parts of the neighborhood you really shouldn't walk through. Here are two of them.

Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream is less than 2 blocks from our apartment and it is habit forming. I didn't have too many problems until my sister Maureen came and I tried the Coffee, Coffee, Buzz, Buzz flavor. Hmmmmmm. It was so good!

I think the Amsterdam Tavern has 18 very good draft beers that change regularly. So you just want to keep stopping by for that $4.00 pint durng happy hour since they change their beers often. The Tavern is only 2 1/2 blocks from where we live.

So - there are some real dangerous places close to where we live.
